Spend a gentle summer morning turning a simple T-shirt into a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art.

In this relaxed, beginner-friendly workshop, artist Izzy Monti will introduce you to cyanotype—a beautiful photographic printing process that uses sunlight to create rich blue images. You will experiment with hand-drawn negatives, found objects, shapes, and layered compositions before creating your own design directly on fabric.

No previous art, photography, or printing experience is needed. You are warmly invited to come as you are, try something new, and enjoy the process of making something completely your own.

What to expect

You will learn how to:

• Prepare and coat fabric

• Create a composition

• Expose your design in sunlight

• Rinse and stop the process

• Dry and care for your finished piece

There will be plenty of time to experiment, ask questions, and receive support.

You will leave with your own wearable cyanotype piece and an understanding of the process.

The atmosphere

Playful, calm, and experimental.

Cyanotype is a mix of planning and letting go. Sunlight, fabric, and timing all shape the final image, so soft edges and unexpected results are welcome.

You can work sitting or standing, take breaks, and move at your own pace.

Who it’s for

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners, artists, makers, teenagers, and children attending with an adult.

Participants under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Please bring your own light-colored T-shirt or choose an optional fabric add-on when booking.

What to bring

Bring one clean, light-colored cotton or linen T-shirt.

You may also bring flat objects, leaves, lace, cut-paper shapes, or other small materials to use in your design.

Avoid synthetic or water-resistant fabrics.

For the best result, wash your T-shirt before the workshop and avoid using fabric softener.

What to wear

Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you do not mind getting a little messy.

Cyanotype solution can leave temporary marks on skin and permanent marks on clothing. Gloves will be provided, and we will work carefully, but small drops and spills can sometimes happen.

Weather note

Cyanotype depends on natural UV light, so part of the workshop will take place outdoors.

The process can still work beautifully with some cloud cover, although exposure times may be a little longer. In the event of heavy rain or unsuitable light conditions, the workshop may move to the announced weather date.

We will contact all participants by email should the date need to change.

Accessibility

The workshop includes drawing, fine-motor work, movement between indoor and outdoor areas, rinsing fabric, and working around a shared table.

Most stages can be completed sitting or standing, and breaks are welcome.

Optional fabric add-ons

Participants who prefer not to bring their own item can select an optional fabric add-on when booking.

Possible options include:

T-shirt sizes must be selected in advance. Add-ons are subject to availability and should be ordered before the booking deadline.

About the instructor

Izzy Monti is a multidisciplinary American artist and educator living in Berlin. Her practice includes painting, drawing, cyanotype, and arts education.

She has been offering cyanotype workshops since 2024 and loves the medium for its responsive, playful, and slightly unpredictable nature. In her own work, she combines hand-drawn negatives, sunlight, translucent fabric, memory, and dreamlike imagery.

Isabel has taught cyanotype alongside introductory glass bending for neon and has worked as an adjunct instructor in the Foundations Program at Alfred University’s School of Art and Design.
